Day 9 Reflection

 Day 9 Reflection

It was a great journey and I have learnt a lot with regards to Digital Fluency and Manaiakalani Kaupapa and Pedagogy of Learn, Create and Share. The Class Sites has had the most impact on my teaching. Having the opportunity to develop my site and make it more appealing for the students. Trying out different tools like Google drawing, slides, forms, etc. My students are getting more confident in using our class site and connecting with other schools through Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu.

Before the exam, I was a bit nervous and I'm still nervous as waiting for the results is the hardest part. Every time, I'm just thinking that hopefully I pass. The Manaiakalani opportunities sound really great but I think at the moment whatever I learnt I would like to put them into my class practise first before stepping up for other roles.

Day 8 Reflection

Day 8 Reflection

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

This week we focussed on the Manaiakalani kaupapa of Empowerment which is about the advancing of Rangatiratanga (taking back control of our own lives). Digital technology assist the making of connections by enabling students to enter and explore new learning environments, overcoming barriers of distance and time.

The greatest joy comes from empowering the students to discover the treasure that lies within them. The four aspects of kaupapa (connected, ubiquitous, visible and empowered) are like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle as they are interconnected to each other.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

The biggest learning for today was the importance of giving the power to the students so that they become the designers of their own future. It is important that students have opportunities to be innovative designers and creators of digital solutions. As shifting to Digital Curriculum, when introducing Computational Thinking we can use a variety of plugged and unplugged activities.

Shama Mihi Maker by cool7 / Full screen / Remix in Gamefroot

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Gamefroot was an awesome resource to use. Making Mihi would be a great way to start Term 1 where the students have to make their own Pepeha. Since my students have already created their Pepeha, Gamefroot would be a fun way to learn coding. I would like to try coding and programming with my students using minecraft as they enjoy minecraft. I also tried a bit of scratch so might try it out with my students.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

The blogging tip was really great. The importance of empowerment and having the choice of making decisions would be helpful in the personal life.

Day 7 Reflection

 Day 7 Reflection

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

This week we focussed on Ubiquitous which means anytime, anywhere, any pace and anyone (A⁴).  According to the Manaiakalani Pedagogy and Kaupapa, if there is an access to a device and wifi, the learners have the potential to be connected to high quality learning experiences at anywhere, anytime and any pace.

Ubiquitous carries the idea that learning takes places outside of the traditional school/classroom in the digital era and there are no barriers where the child can do the learning anywhere, any time and any place. Offering Ubiquitous learning opportunities gives kids more hours to continue learning. Digital technologies have the ability to positively change circumstances and should not be dismissed as ‘just’ a tool. The Manaiakalani programme has embraced rewindable learning in 2020. Rewindable learning makes learning accessible to more learners and enabling young people to visit it over and over again.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Using Explain Everything (EE) on ipad has really improved my confidence as my students use this device (ipad) and I could see how unfamiliar I was with the device.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I would love to try Explain Everything with my students as one of the creative activity and let them explore the whiteboard and the tools associated with it.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Learning about Ubiquitous was really helpful. This made me realise that if I set some work for my learners, they can do it even without my presence. So in this way I'll be able to manage my time well.

Day 6 Reflection

 Day 6 Reflection

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

This week we focussed on connectivity as it is one of the Kaupapa Goals. Manaiakalani connects us to a powerful network, acknowledging the power of digital and it supports schools and teachers to connect with the learners and with each other.

Manaiakalani Programme is all about developing a learning community where all members are connected and empowered through a shared pedagogy, a shared understanding of the Manaiakalani Kaupapa and visible teaching and learning is foundational.

With Manaiakalani's kaupapa and pedagogy of Learn, Create and Share, Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu empowers young people to be cybersmart and using our class blogging platform to build powerful connections across clusters.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

After exploring a selection of class sites and getting feedback from my group about my site, I was able to make my homepage more visual appealing for the learners. I was able to work on the layout of my site and add more resources for inquiry learning and maths.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Using the class class more often would be a great way to hook my learners for reading and inquiry. I would also encourage them to use the resources available on the site. Give the students an opportunity to explore the class site.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

I actually needed the time to work on my class site and now since it looks more visual appealing, it has reduced my workload.

Day 5 Reflections

 Day 5 Reflections

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

This week we focussed on the importance of making teaching and learning visible, accessible and available to both the learners, teachers and the wider community (whanau). This visibility contributes to a strong partnership with whanau. Having the teaching visible to our colleagues is a great way to learn from each other and share our ideas. Visible learning will lead to effective teaching and accelerated learning.

Google sites has been considered as the best tool for visible teaching and learning. The most effective teachers use Learn - Create - Share pedagogy and their use of class sites to make teaching and learning visible further supported students agency. The Manaiakalani design which includes the partnership has been the major contributor of the acceleration. Blogger is also another great site to make individual teaching and learning visible. Manaiakalani programme ensures that success is available to everyone.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Multi modal was something really awesome and inspiring as I learnt the importance of hooking the learners into learning. Multi text database is a very useful tool for the Reading Programme. Collaborative sites plan is a great idea and perhaps it could be used for our senior team to collect resources.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I might relook at my class site and add some more complementary texts related to their main text. Encourage the students to use the class site frequently and link the texts to their personal life.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

I'll try to create multimodal sites for reading so it could help me later. Labelling the blogs is also very helpful.

Day 4 Reflections

 Day 4 Reflections

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

This week we looked at the sharing part of the Pedagogy. Sharing is all about making connections. During Lockdown, in just one month about 30,000 pieces of learning and posts were shared across the country. Last year's research data also showed that Manaiakalani students showed a progress in writing and it raised the achievement outcome. People have been sharing using a variety of social media. Sharing since the time began was done with one another, the school, the local community and now in digital age, sharing is done globally.

Blogger has been chosen as a platform by Manaiakalani to share as it resembles the space our young people want to be on. It's the largest audience reach via Google. It is multi purposed and can be used by both teachers and learners. sharing has encouraged the students to blog more and share their work to a worldwide audience. Sharing is regarded as a starting point of new learning. It has helped learners to develop digital citizenship and it connect the leaners together.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Creating a google form after completing a strand in Maths or inquiry would be a great help to help students understanding.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners, how could they use

Google my maps - My students are already using google my maps to connect to other schools (other students) but maybe I can teach them in detail how to add a layer or direction or  change the base map.

A the moment my learning are reading other students blog post and the comments so Quality blog comments could be helpful when they get to comment to other students blog posts.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Using Google sheets instead of creating a table in word document while preparing an analysis for Reading, Writing or Maths would be helpful.

Example of Google Sheet 1:

Example of Google Sheet 2: Julianna's Blog Post.

Day 3 Reflections

 Day 3 Reflections

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani Kaupapa and pedagogy?

This week we focussed on the creative part of the pedagogy. Creative skills help students to become better problem solvers, communicators and collaborators. By exposing children to creative experiences, we give them the gift of a rich and memorable childhood. Creativity is all about thinking, exploring, discovering and imagining. To neglect the contribution of the arts in education, either through inadequate time, resources or poorly trained teachers, is to deny children access to one of the most stunning aspects of their culture and one of the post potent means for developing their minds. Creativity focusses on the process of forming original ideas through exploration and discovery.

One of the foundation goals of the Manaiakalani Programme is to "motivate our learners to engage with the curriculum" and creativity plays a significant part in learning and teaching opportunities. Effective teachers designed tasks to generate thinking and allowed students for collaboration and choice in learning and creating. Creativity is considered as one of the 6 C's of Education in the 21st century. Finally, Creativity empowers learners.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I have enjoyed creating a playlist on You tube that I'll use during my art time with the students. Different ways to create media and next time when I'm taking a photo or video I can create a tripod stand.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I learned how to use google drawing and I would definitely try it with my learners. Set that as an activity to use shapes and draw something. I also enjoyed doing animation which I am looking forward to try with my learners.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

I have enjoyed creating a playlist on You tube that I'll use while doing my work.
Different ways to create media is quite beneficial and next time when I'm taking a photo or video I can create a tripod stand.

Day 2 Reflection

 Day 2 Reflection

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

This week we focussed on the Ako (Learn) component of the Pedadogy. I learnt the four goals of Manaiakalani which describes both teachers and students as learners. The underpinning believe of the Manaiakalani Programme is Effective teachers implement effective practice and this needs to be recognisable no matter which world it is happening. It's very important that when we move into this digital world, we need to recognise the effective practice that is making a difference to our young people whether we are in a digital world or in a digital teaching environment.

The key messages for Recognising Effective Practice are: learning by reading from authentic texts, by sharing ideas in discussion, by thinking categories and developing strategies and collaborating and making choices in learning, creating and sharing.

Manaiakalani has presented an idea of learning through RATE (Recognise, Amplify, Turbocharge, effective practice in the digital world of our learners). Highly effective teaching is happening through the Manaiakalani Programme and these effective teachers are prepared to invest in the young people: invest their expertise and their passion and are open to learning mindsets.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I learnt how to use Google Keep as I feel it's very useful to take notes as we go through the day. Previously, I always used sticky notes and attached it to my laptop.  I also found using and saving the signature in the gmail quite convenient so now I don't have to write my name every time I send an email. Another thing I found very useful was changing the settings for Undo Send to 30 seconds. Creating a Google Meet and inviting other people will also be useful next time when we have some crisis where we have to do online teaching.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I learnt how to record myself when I'm commenting on a blog post in Google Meet while presenting/ sharing my screen with my buddy. Even though my video is not that great but I am definitely going to try that out with my students.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

I learnt how to use Google Keep and I feel it's a very useful tool to take notes as we go through the day. I also love the voice memos as this app converts the speech to text. I found Calendar quite useful as well which will help me to note the important dates for family functions and events.

Day 1 Reflection

Day 1 Reflection

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Looking at the pedagogy of Manaiakalani: Learn, Create and Share, I learnt that the Manaiakalani Programme is not only achieving improved educational results, but also realising the potential for greatly enhanced employment and life outcomes for our students.

Being at a school where we started the 1:1 journey this year, I do feel that I'm privileged to get a chance to learn alongside my students as I am having in-class support with Maria Krausse and I have learnt a lot of things which now I can teach my students.

This programme will help my learners and their whanau, and enable them to access their learning anywhere, anytime and at any pace. They will support the parents to buy a personal digital device for each learner and providing wireless internet access at home and school. During Covid-19, it was very difficult to communicate with the students as only 1/3 of my class had access to internet so through Manaiakalani I am confident that in the near future all my students will have a device to work at home with.

The Manaiakalani story is very powerful and liberating. I also learnt that the Manaiakalani Education Trust was formed in 2011 to ensure the schools delivering the Manaiakalani programme have the resources they need to make the most of the opportunities available through digital technologies.

I learnt that Manaiakalani is the name of a star line, translated "The Hook from Heaven". It’s also a perfect metaphor for our journey of discovery using digital learning tools as a hook and a guide to deliver the knowledge our children need to be successful citizens of the 21st century.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

As a professional, to improve my confidence and capability, I learnt the importance of organising the folders in my drive (store, locate, share, collaborate). I also learnt that when creating a new Google Doc how to add a title and heading to the documents. I also learnt how to separate the documents into paragraphs giving them a title, changing the font and colour of the title and how to insert a table of contents into a google doc. I am more confident in using the voice typing from the tools and recording the story. From now onwards I'll be using google docs when I'll be recording the staff minutes or our levels minutes using these tools.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Voice typing was one thing that I would love to use with my learners since I have some hesitant writers in my class so this will help them in their story writing. This would also help the other learners in class to write a story using the Google Docs.

I would also love to use Google Docs with my learners to create a poster just like the one I created today.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

To improve my confidence and capability in my personal life, I learnt the importance of organising the folders in my drive (store, locate, share, collaborate). While doing my assignments in future I would be confident in using the Google Docs (giving my document a table of confident, title, headings, etc).
